Principal’s Message

Tēnā koutou katoa. Thank you for taking the time to visit our website.

My name is Darren Torrie and I am very honoured to introduce myself as the principal of St Johns Hill School. I lead a team of passionate, energetic and engaging staff who have the belief that it is our role to nurture and encourage the natural curiosities of our students.

We build a strong sense of belonging and whānau here at St Johns Hill School built upon out four pillars:

  • Kaitiakitanga: we are the guardians of our environment, community, culture and future
  • Manaakitanga: we treat each other with respect and kindness
  • Rangatiratanga: we are confident, self-determined learners and leaders
  • Kotahitanga: we are united, we work together and support each other to succeed

Our vision of having “confident, creative, lifelong learners and caring citizens, who contribute positively to a sustainable world” can be seen in all aspects of our school.

Our beautiful school sits in a parklike setting surrounded with trees, fruit and vegetable gardens and even chickens. As an Education for Sustainability school we have attained Green/Gold status which the students are very proud of. This recognises their endeavours to reducing the impact they have on our environment as well as exploring our rights and responsibilities of contributing to a thriving community and celebrating our local stories and history.

High standards and a supportive community allow our students to excel in all aspects of school life, from academics and sporting prowess through to cultural and environmental activities. We foster a real sense of ownership and responsibility within all of our students which is reflected in the way that they cooperate and collaborate with each other.

SJHS Board of Trustees and Staff welcomes all enquiries regarding our school.
